I did not know Durk & Sandy, but was introduced to their products especially Blast Caps & Wow through Omnitrition a network Marketling company. When that company went belly up or disappeared for some reason. I found Blast Caps online and have been taking then since sometime in the 80″s faithfully all of these years. I will be 76 next month. I have been buying Blast Caps from Swansons and iHerb. I recently found out both have discontinued Blast Caps so I find myself on a search to find another source, that is how I discovered the passing of Durk & Sandy. A great loss for society. I did find Blast caps on a Life Extension site, but with the price more than $10 a bottle high. I had the honor and privilege to interview them at their home in Tonopah, Nevada in December 1998. The interview was published in the July 1999 issue of The Life Extension Foundation’s monthly magazine. Now in 2025, I’m shocked and saddened to hear of their death, especially at such a relatively young age! I thought for sure that they would reach 100+. Reading their best-seller, “Life Extension: A Practical Scientific Approach” was the inspiration that began my quest for extreme longevity, as well as for many others. I’ve been taking about 150 vitamins daily for many years now, and am told I seem at least 20+ years younger. They were instrumental in starting the awareness of life extension! Their passing has definitely been a loss to the science of bio-hacking.

I went to MIT at the same time as Durk. We were two of a four-person subgroup of the MIT Science Fiction Fiction Society – Tablecomm. Rick Norwood and Bill Osten were the other two. Durk and I lost track of each other some while after MIT, though I did read (and take advice from) Life Extension. We’ve both led interesting lives in our varied ways, and I really wanted to get in touch with him and swap stories. But for someone as public as Durk, he sure was hard to find, and now he’s gone.

Ah, but we raised a fuss when we were at MIT. We almost got thrown out of school for similar-but-different matters, involving books. Although the statute of limitations has passed away, and so has Durk, I’m still around and don’t need the harassment. Nor do you.

Durk and Sandy(and their book) opened my eyes to so many things in the late 80’s and I have been a follower ever since.

I am quite disappointed in Durk and Sandy for dying relatively young and completely halting their reports on how supplements etc were affecting their life/health (for the better). Particularly in “Life Extension”, they continually stated that they were their own test beds, their own guinea pigs. And they had a goal of living long and physically robust lives. And then nothing more. No health reports. Nothing on “this worked and this didn’t.” I was expecting a blow-by-blow and, in the end, got nothing.

I watched Durk Pearson many times on the Merv Griffin show. When my husband was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 30, he was told that he would be in a wheelchair in five years. I bought Durk’s book, ‘Life Extensions’ and my husband started taking the SOD complex every day for a year. He was taking one hundred thousand milligrams of vitamin C a day. Within a few weeks of following Durk’s recommendations, the knuckles in his hands untwisted and became normal again. The arthritis went away and never returned.

I think people are too focused on the age of both Pearson and Shaw’s deaths.

The real benefit of adequate nutrition is a longer physical and intellectual health span while alive.

Nutrients or medical interventions, may override genetics for a while, but in the end, at this point in scientific knowledge, Genetics always wins.

I think in the interest of gerontological research it’s vital to separate Durk and Sandy’s personalities and professional accomplishments- clearly impressive- from what, if any, benefits either of them derived from their nutritional/supplemental regimens. Nearly all the comments simply, and to me incorrectly, focus on Durk’s obvious genius but fail to ask why he died at an age many smokers, drinkers, and others who flaunt today’s understanding of good nutrition and lifestyle easily surpass. I’ve heard that Durk came from a lineage that was not particularly long-lived. Sandy, I don’t know. Sticking with Durk, we seem to be confronted by at least two vexing and confounding possibilities: 1.) genetics far outweighs, and even may negate, any salubrious effects of nutritional supplementation, ie: no supplemental interventions could have lengthened Durk’s life given his genetic history; or 2.) supplementation can effectively lengthen life, but the supplements Durk used were incorrect in either type and/or dosage. Here’s just one thought: there’s no dearth of studies that suggest (but do not prove) that huge exogenous intake of antioxidants can and does suppress the body’s production of endogenous antioxidants. Maybe in some situations more of certain things is NOT better. In conclusion, I’m all for recognizing Durk for being a very smart and accomplished guy. However, I think he would want us to focus on the role nutritional supplementation might play in life extension rather than simply remember him as a smart and kind guy.

discoveries and writings Im surprised they werent eulogized

Durk was an outstanding accomplished individualist. I enjoyed his consulting on health and he gave his time freely. His passing is a great loss.
