Keep Organics GMO Free

Keep Organics GMO Free

Several important issues are coming before the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) this fall—let’s make sure industry interests don’t prevail. Action Alert!

The NOSB will hold its fall 2019 meeting in late October. NOSB is the governing board created by Congress that reviews all synthetic and non-organic materials proposed by Big Ag before they can be used in organic farming or food production. There are two issues that require our attention at this next meeting: induced mutagenesis and vaccines.

Genetic modification is excluded from organic agriculture, but there is an ongoing debate at NOSB as to what practices constitute genetic modification. One such practice that will be discussed at the next meeting is induced mutagenesis. Induced mutagenesis, as opposed to natural mutagenesis, is when mutations in plants are brought about through exposure to ionizing radiation (such as ultraviolet light or X-rays) or certain chemical agents.

We’ve written before about the dangers of plant irradiation, which also involves exposing foods to ionizing radiation. There are many reasons irradiated food is bad for us. Research indicates a wide range of problems in animals that eat irradiated food, including chromosomal abnormalities, a rare form of cancer, and even premature death. Irradiating food can kill bacteria from filthy CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations) and processing plants, but it cannot address the other unhealthy conditions found there. Irradiation may also dramatically change flavor, odor, and texture of food, in addition to nutritional value. There is also evidence that induced mutagenesis produces more unintended changes in gene expression than genetic engineering.

In short, intentionally exposing plants to radiation does not strike us as something that should be allowed in organic agriculture, where consumers expect foods to be grown without the use of pesticides and other toxic agents.

NOSB is also considering whether to allow vaccines produced through “excluded methods” to be allowed in organic food. “Excluded methods” refers to practices like genetic modification; the use of GMO vaccines continues to be an issue at NOSB, and one on which ANH has remained active for some time. The NOSB is currently considering whether to allow vaccines produced through excluded methods in instances when an equivalent vaccine not produced through excluded methods is not commercially available.

To us, this seems like a sneaky way for Big Food to smuggle GMO vaccines into organic production. Natural health advocates have been fighting this point for some time, so perhaps Big Ag is trying to sneak GMO vaccines through this type of loophole. Again, consumers purchase organic products with certain expectations—among the most important is that the food isn’t genetically modified or produced with any GMOs—and this exemption would undermine these expectations for the benefit of CAFOs who do not actually care about organic standards. We cannot let them succeed.

Action Alert! Write to NOSB and Congress, telling them to reject induced mutagenesis and vaccines produced through excluded methods from organic production. Please send your message immediately.

Big Pharma and Big Ag have rigged the food system and continue to pour poisons into our bodies to satisfy their blatant greed. We have a right to healthy food.

God did not design foods to include GMO or it would be in the organic foods. The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) must listen to those involved in organic foods for years. They have the research to backup their reports. Congressmen, or members of the family, who make a profit from the stocks and investments of companies that produce the GMO’s should not have any say at the meeting in October 2019 as they already are placing profit over health.

No GMO should be included in the Organic process. It is the antithesis of what the point of organic is. I do not eat GMO’s. I do eat Organic at every opportunity. If GMO’s are included my diet will be severely restricted. No one should be in that position. Just keep GMO’s out of our organics. It’s bad enough that they’re in foods at all, but organic is a separate – or should be – thing altogether.

Please reject induced mutagenesis and vaccines produced through excluded methods from organic production.

Organics need to be pure. No gmo ingredients, EVER.

  • To whom it may concern at NOSB and Congress. Please reject allowing vaccines produced through excluded methods and also reject induced mutagenesis from organic production of foods designated non GMO.

  • g. willis

    Please keep organics gmo free.
We do not want to purchase, consume or support gmo’s.
We need organics to maintain health of ourselves, and our garden.
    Please keep organics gmo free.

Foods labeled as organic must be keep free of GMO alteration. Otherwise, the “organic” label loses its meaning. Consumers have a right to choose and trust what they eat, and that means accurate labels with the definition of the labels spelled out.

  • Linda Simpson

NONE of our food supplies should be radiated period and GMO vaccines should be stopped! Who elected food czars to control what is farmed and harvested in our Republic? American citizens didn’t! Is the almighty dollar so important to you that you are willing to risk the livelihood of your family members and millions of citizens and YOU? STOP THIS NONSENSE.

Big Pharma has been doing all it can to keep hemp and cannabinoid products off the market due to incredible greed, arrogance and lack of concern for the health of humanity and/or the environment and every living thing on the planet.
The time for that to stop is NOW!!

  • If you have read this ‘Keep organics protected from GMOs’ I’m sure you appreciate why I’m concerned. I am opposed to allowing GMOs to be included and still call the product organic. Please do not allow induced mutagenesis and let it be passed off as ‘organic. Far too dangerous.

Keep those ‘excluded methods’ out, too. Genetic modification and the use of GMO vaccines is deceptive and must be prevented. Don’t let greed destroy our faith in organics.

The health and safety of my FAMILY is MY responsibility and paramount in my choices when I buy food. It is my RIGHT to know what is in or on the food, and, how and where it has been grown and processed.

I don’t want to eat anything that is not produced by natural means or that has been in any way modified. Keep organics pure!

  • Thomas V. Connor

Please reject reduced mutagenesis and vaccines produced through excluded methods from organic production.

Sounds like some obscenely wealthy GMO corporate head or his toady has invaded the NOSB and that is why the board is now having to discuss including GMO products into its organic produce. DO NOT DO IT. I do not buy organic produce just to discover that they are actually freaking GMO altered goods. GAG.

As I have overcome Near-Death more than once — walking without any predicted walking aid whatsoever — I truly believe in Hippocrates’ “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.”
So to begin LEGALIZING “synthetic and non-organic materials proposed by Big Ag” is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS!
Truly, especially as my father was a pharmaceutical PhD, aware for decades prior to his death how manipulating all types of medicines make their production cheaper, while diminishing their abilities to work with the body — can NOT happen with our food!

  • Phoebe McLeod

There is no place for GMOs in organic food. Consumers must have the right to know what is in their food and to be able to avoid GMOs when buying organic food.

  • Toni Francis

Reject induced mutagenesis and vaccines produced through excluded methods from organic production. This violates the standards for organic foods and cannot be allowed.

  • Anabel Leigh

Please keep our produce clean and free from irradiation, genetic modifications and all these other ideas that hurt us rather than help us.

  • Marcel Dijsselbloem

Keep Food natural in original nature state.
Nature is very old and still works good.
No need to involve in Mother Nature process, by altering the Gen-DNA structure. In chemical way, ionizing radiation way or by induced mutagenesis.

Love and respect for our Nature our world our planet.

    Love to all, Marcel

It is vital to be able to rely on organic foods as truly organic!!! No GMOs!!!!
REJECT induced mutagenesis & vaccines produced through excluded methods from organic production!!!!
I’m following this closely—highly concerned re industry interests prevailing over those of the rest of US!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep Organics free of all irradiation, GMO’s, GMO vaccinations and induced mutagenesis. Stop all efforts to improve on God.s creation of pure unadulterated food! Stop playing with our food. We don’t want this!!!

  • Melanie Cohick

Please reject induce mutagenesis and vaccines produced through excluded methods from organic production. People who choose organic food expect organic food that isn’t genetically modified or produced with any GMOs. This is extremely important!

  • I purchase organic foods because this is the closest way to be “from the earth”, and not tai Ted with heavy herbicide, fungicide, pesticide loads.
Irradiation has no place in cleaner organic foods. Keep irradiation out of organics.
